Senior Research Staff Member/Team Leader
We are conducting a search for an exceptional research leader in the advanced Data Management and Distributed Systems Research field. Reporting to the Department Head of the lab, the overall mission of the position is to define a cutting edge research agenda for the department; build a world-class team; and direct activities to achieve the dual objectives of research excellence and impact on business. The focus will be the development of a new database paradigm converging Cloud Computing and Distributed Systems for the Enterprise - here lies significant challenge and the opportunity for technology disruption!
The team leader will have the opportunity for significant industry/academic visibility through leadership in symposia, publishing, intellectual property development, and challenging the industry status-quo! He/she will inherit and lead a talented research group of 5 which currently conducts research in Information Analysis and Management. There are 2 other senior positions fully funded which will report as well and the team leader will be expected to recruit these two researchers to fill out the group.
Position Responsibilities:
- Define the vision and research roadmap for the department in support of the Labs' overall mission and strategy.
DB and IR integration for efficient access to heterogeneous data
- Sustain and strengthen world-class core competencies through recruiting, guidance, and continuous development of research talent.
- Define and get support for research projects, and manage their execution.
- Encourage collaboration with other internal research groups through joint projects.
- Coordinate protection of Labs' intellectual property with legal counsel.
- Maintain linkages with outside academic and industrial research communities.
- Interact with company business groups to provide thought leadership, align objectives, and ensure successful commercialization of technology.
- Participate on the Labs' leadership team to set overall strategic direction and policies.
Candidate Specifications:
To qualify for this position candidates must have these skills and experiences in their background:
- Must have a PhD in Computer Science (or equivalent) from a first-tier university with excellent on-going academic connections.
- Must have 5 or more years of progressive experience including being a lead or principal investigator in a significant related research program.
- Candidate must be a visionary, innovator, and leader in the advanced Data Management and Distributed Systems research community able to propose innovative research topics that have both great impact and business values specifically at the crossroads of Cloud Computing and Next Generation Databases (e.g., Hadoop, Cloud DB, DB Virtualization, VLDB, Distributed-Caching, Business Intelligence, Data Warehousing, etc...)
- Proven record of excellent leadership in the above manifested by exemplary record of recruiting teams and building teamwork and communications skills as well as a distinguished publication and patent application record.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to motivate a highly talented staff.
