Postdoctoral Researchers - Broadband and Mobile Networking - Optical Networking

The Optical Networking group is seeking Postdoctoral Researchers as follows:

Networking

The successful candidate will investigate techniques and develop solutions to improve optical switching system and DWDM network performance. Specifically the person will design and model high-speed optical switching node and network; design and develop fiber optic devices and subsystems for optical networking applications, including both active and passive devices; and develop techniques to improve optical switching system and network performance, and to build test-bed to verify the performance.

Required Education/Experience:

  • Masters degree in EE or CS plus a minimum 5 years of advanced research experience in fiber optic communications
  • Expert knowledge in the design and development of passive and active optical components, devices and subsystems (e.g. EDFA, laser, modulator, demodulator, etc.)
  • Extensive knowledge of fiber optics, amplifier control techniques, optical switching techniques, switching node architecture and the physical layer of DWDM long haul/ metro/ access networks
  • Extensive experience with fiber optic numerical simulation software (e.g. VPI and R-Soft)
  • Knowledge of high-speed fiber optic transmission and transportation systems
  • Software development in C/C++, LabVIEW, or Visual Basic, etc.

Skills:

  • Ability to creatively apply knowledge and experience to meet technology goals and objectives
  • Technology development, modeling, simulation, experiment and analysis
  • Ability to understand and explain complex technical concepts
  • Extensive experience with fiber optic numerical simulation software (e.g. VPI and R-Soft)
  • Strong interpersonal, communications, organization, technical writing and presentation skills

Access Networks

The successful candidate will actively participate and contribute to the advanced research and technology development for the integration of optical and wireless technologies in the access networks. Specifically the person will develop new integrated optical and wireless access network architecture; develop cross-layer network control and management algorithms (such as scheduling and resource allocation algorithms) and physical layer techniques to improve network performance; and verify the performance improvement through modeling and building experimental test-bed.

Required Education/Experience:

  • Masters degree in EE or CS plus a minimum 5 years of advanced research experience in fiber optic communications
  • Extensive knowledge of optical and RF communication theory, digital signal processing
  • Expert knowledge and in-depth research experience with various types of PON systems, familiar knowledge of metro networks and applications
  • Solid across layers background in FTTx / SONET / cellular/ WiMAX communication systems
  • Extensive experience with network simulation software (e.g. OPNET)
  • In-depth knowledge and research experience with OFDM, CDMA and C/DWDM based systems
  • Familiar with fiber optic components, devices and measurement instruments
  • Software development in C/C++, LabVIEW, or Visual Basic, etc.

Skills:

  • Ability to creatively apply knowledge and experience to meet technology goals and objectives
  • Technology development, modeling, simulation, experiment and analysis
  • Ability to understand and explain complex technical concepts
  • Strong interpersonal, communications, organization, technical writing and presentation skills
