Information Specific to Princeton Area

Once your internship with NEC Labs has been confirmed and all associated paperwork submitted, you will be given access to the NEC Labs Intern wiki site so that you can see who else will be joining us this summer, get direct contact info for one another, share travel plans, look for a roommate...or post whatever else comes to mind.

In the meantime, here are some other resources to help you get set up:

Housing

In many university towns there are more summer sublets available than there is demand—unfortunately that’s not the case in the Princeton area.  If you’re coming during Princeton University’s summer break (June, July and August) it’s not too difficult to find shared accommodations.  However, if you’re arriving earlier or staying later or want a one-bedroom, you’ll have more of a challenge.

Shared apartments and rooms are the most reasonable and available.  Affordable one-bedroom short-term rentals are much less common.  A shared space may be preferable to a room in a private home, even though the cost may be comparable since when you live in a private home, you generally have less access to the kitchen and living space.

If you’re coming a distance and don’t have a place to stay upon arrival, a room in a private home rented by the week might be an alternative until you find something more appropriate—it will at least buy you time to look around.

Probably the best overall source is Craig’s List—for Princeton, click on New Jersey and then search using Princeton as a key word.

Another option, available again this year, is a slot in the two two-bedroom apartments in the University Center at Easton Avenue, a Rutgers University facility.  These two apartments will accommodate a total of eight interns and will be offered on a first-come basis.

The period the apartments are available is from May 30th through August 15th at a cost of $1,360 per occupant for that entire 10-week period.  If the entire 10-week period does not fit your internship schedule, you will only be responsible for the time you use the apartment.   The other thing to consider is that you may need to make independent supplemental living arrangements on the front or back end of that period (or both) depending on how your stay aligns with the term of availability.

The University Center is an electronically secured, air-conditioned 12-story apartment complex in downtown New Brunswick with a comprehensive modern fitness center (membership included), laundry facilities, and parking available (at an additional cost of $175 for the period).  It is located directly across the street from the New Brunswick train station, an easy 15-minute commute to Princeton Junction at which point you can pick up the NJ Transit line to the business park adjoining NECLA's.

We will be happy to provide you with additional information once your internship period has been established.

Getting To and Around Princeton

By plane…

NEC Labs is equidistant, just over an hour,  from either the Newark International Airport (EWR) http://www.panynj.gov/CommutingTravel/airports/html/newarkliberty.html [External link] or the Philadelphia Airport (PHL) http://www.phl.org/index.html [External link] , however, the linking transport options are better from Newark.   The New York city airports, JFK and LaGuardia, are also options but the ground transport to/from them is far more cumbersome.

Here are some travel options from Newark Airport:

  • Airporter Shuttle – the Holiday Inn (South Brunswick) stop is the building next to NEC (about ¼ mile away) http://www.goairporter.com [External link]
  • New Jersey Transit Train – Newark Liberty International Airport stop will take you from the airport to Princeton Junction  http://www.njtransit.com [External link]

By train…

  • From New York City – Penn Station

Take NJ Transit train (Northeast corridor line) to Princeton Junction  (www.njtransit.com) [External link]

By automobile…

OR…

For those among you who get your exercise by biking to work, NEC Labs supplies both bike racks and bike lockers for your convenience.  Please refer to Biking Information for directions (courtesy of a former intern, Pavol Cerny) using the canal tow path for the first leg of the trip.
