Head of Department: Cristian Ungureanu
Sr. Admin. Assistant: Renee Bartuska

We are a research group interested in all aspects of storage system design and evaluation. Currently we are working on projects in a number of areas including cloud and distributed storage, solid-state storage, quality of service, energy efficient storage systems, and file systems.  Our research led to the HYDRAstor product launched by NEC, available in the US and Japan.

We are looking to hire full time researchers and interns for summer '10 (see details).

Research Areas

HYDRAstor

This research is aimed at providing a scale-out storage platform based on a community of nodes operating as a single system to provide a set of data management services. The system provides duplicate elimination across all the storage nodes, is resilient to multiple disk and node failures, and can recover from such failures without administrator intervention.

Energy Efficiency

The goal of this project is to reduce energy consumption in distributed storage through autonomic and adaptive placement and caching of data in a way that allows a large fraction of hard disks or even storage nodes to be turned off.

Quality of Service

One of the challenges in sharing a storage system is that one user's activity interferes with that of other users. The goal of this project is to provide mechanisms through which the storage system can provide quality of service guarantees to multiple users in a way that allows efficient utilization of resources.
