Cultural Alignment in AI refers to the process of adapting large language models to reflect the values, norms, and communicative conventions of specific cultural contexts, rather than defaulting to dominant cultural assumptions encoded during pretraining. It addresses cross-cultural interference, where applying one culture’s norms degrades performance on another, and task specificity, ensuring cultural adaptations are relevant to downstream use cases. Research approaches include modular adapter systems, culture-aware data synthesis, and task-aware fine-tuning pipelines.
