As 2025 comes to a close, NEC Laboratories America reflects on a year defined by scientific breakthroughs, global collaboration, and real-world impact. Our researchers advanced the state of the art across AI, optical networking and sensing, system security, and multimodal analytics, while expanding our intellectual property portfolio and presence at the world’s leading conferences. NEC Laboratories America is heading to San Diego for NeurIPS 2025, where our researchers will present cutting-edge work spanning optimization, AI systems, language modeling, and trustworthy machine learning. This year’s lineup highlights breakthroughs in areas like multi-agent coordination, scalable training, efficient inference, and techniques for detecting LLM-generated text. Together, these contributions reflect our commitment to advancing fundamental science while building real-world solutions that strengthen industry and society. We’re excited to join the global AI community in San Diego from November 30 to December 5 to share our latest innovations.

Eric Blow of NEC Labs will address how machine-learning methods applied to distributed acoustic-sensing data can monitor facility perimeters and detect intrusion via walk, dig, or drive events over buried optical fibre—for example achieving ~90% classification accuracy. Later in the week he will explore neuromorphic photonic RF sensing combining silicon photonics with FPGA-based recurrent neural networks, and his intern Yuxin Wang will present a finalist paper on scalable photonic neurons for automatic modulation classification.

Our Giovanni Milione will present Mobile Orbital Domains: Addressing Dynamic Topology Challenges in Satellite Networks (JW4A.47) in Joint Poster Session III at the Frontiers in Optics + Laser Science (FiO LS) conference in Denver, CO, on October 29, 2025, 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM. We analyze satellite trajectories and identify satellite backbone networks with stable inter-satellite connections.

Join our Andrea D’Amico as he presents Open and Disaggregated Optical Networks: From Vision to Reality (FW6E.1) at part of the Next-Generation Optical Fiber Transmission Systems and Networks Session at the Frontiers in Optics + Laser Science (FiO LS) conference in Denver, CO, on October 29, 2025, 3:30 PM to 4:00 PM. Open and disaggregated optical networks can potentially reshape the telecom landscape.

Kunal Rao (presenting virtually) will present “SlideCraft: Context-Aware Slides Generation Agent” at the IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Intelligence and Computing hashtag#PICom2025 on Tuesday, Oct 21 (10:30am–12pm JST) | Monday, Oct 20 (9:30–11pm ET) in Hokkaido, Japan. SlideCraft uses AI to automatically generate presentation slides from research content, making technical communication faster and context-aware for scientists and professionals.

Our Sparsh Garg, a Senior Associate Researcher in the Media Analytics Department, will present “Mapillary Vistas Validation for Fine-Grained Traffic Signs: A Benchmark Revealing Vision-Language Model Limitations” at the Data Computer Vision (DataCV) 2025 workshop as part of ICCV 2025 in Honolulu, Hawai'i, on Sunday, October 19th, from 11:15 am – 11:25 am.

NEC Laboratories America (NECLA) was proud to join the European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC 2025) in Copenhagen, Denmark, from September 28 to October 2. Our researchers presented cutting-edge work in distributed acoustic sensing, AI-driven fiber optics, and optical networking. From generative models for event classification to digital twins and entomological observations using telecom fibers, these sessions highlighted NECLA’s role in shaping the future of intelligent and resilient communication systems. In addition, NECLA’s Fatih Yaman co-organized a workshop on emerging frontiers in optical communication.

Our researcher Xujiang Zhao will present “Uncertainty Quantification and Reasoning for Reliable AI” at Brigham Young University on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 11 a.m. in TMCB 1170. The seminar explores how statistical modeling and reasoning frameworks can strengthen trustworthy AI, making systems more robust and transparent in high-stakes applications like healthcare and autonomous systems. Attendees will gain insights into how uncertainty quantification is shaping the next generation of responsible AI.

NEC Laboratories America (NECLA) is advancing the frontier of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), a transformative AI technology that processes complex, interconnected data. Through innovations like PTDNet for robust learning, novel frameworks for explainability, StrGNN for anomaly detection in dynamic graphs, and GERDQ for calibration with out-of-distribution nodes, NECLA is addressing critical challenges in GNN development. These breakthroughs have real-world implications in fields such as cybersecurity, bioinformatics, and recommendation systems, positioning NECLA as a leader in the evolution of graph-based AI.

The NEC Labs America Optical Networking and Sensing team is attending the 2025 Optical Fiber Communications Conference and Exhibition (OFC), the premier global event for optical networking and communications. Bringing together over 13,500 attendees from 83+ countries, more than 670 exhibitors, and hundreds of sessions featuring industry leaders, OFC 2025 serves as the central hub for innovation and collaboration in the field. At this year’s conference, NEC Labs America will showcase its cutting-edge research and advancements through multiple presentations, demonstrations, and workshops.

Our NEC Lab America team attended the Thirty-Ninth AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AAAI-25), in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the Pennsylvania Convention Center from February 25 to March 4, 2025. The purpose of the AAAI conference series was to promote research in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and foster scientific exchange between researchers, practitioners, scientists, students, and engineers across the entirety of AI and its affiliated disciplines. Our team presented technical papers, led special tracks, delivered talks on key topics, participated in workshops, conducted tutorials, and showcased research in poster sessions. The team greeted visitors at Booth #208 and was there Thursday through Saturday.

We are thrilled to announce the launch of our latest research initiative, the Trustworthy Generative AI Project. This ambitious project is set to revolutionize how we interact with multimodal content by developing cutting-edge generative models capable of compositional generation and reasoning across text, images, reports, and even 3D videos.

Our new project, Time Series Language Model for Explainable AI, represents a significant leap forward in the field of forecasting and explainable AI. By combining advanced forecasting techniques with explainable AI, we are paving the way for a future where data-driven insights are not only accurate but also comprehensible and actionable.

The development of Agentic LLMs for AI Orchestration represents a significant advancement in artificial intelligence. By seamlessly integrating computer vision, logic, and compute modules, our LLM is poised to revolutionize the way complex workflows are managed and executed. Supported by robust research and driven by innovative training methodologies, our agentic LLM sets a new standard in AI orchestration, offering unparalleled performance and adaptability.

Chris White discusses the evolution of scientific disciplines, which often begin with exploration driven by curiosity and experimentation. As fields grow in complexity and cost, they shift to theoretical frameworks that optimize research. This transition is crucial for sustainable progress. Currently, AI and ML remain largely experimental, highlighting the need for theoretical foundations to ensure development.

Today, each country, government, and enterprise are urged to take effective action to fight against climate change; however, an efficient method has not been found. Even a way to accurately calculate Scope 3 carbon emissions has yet to be developed. The technology of a multi-agent simulator could be an essential step in solving worldwide challenges. We interviewed the researchers about the details of this technology.

NEC Laboratories Europe and NEC Laboratories America have developed MateriAI, an AI-based, material design platform that accelerates the development of new, environmentally friendly materials. The prototype platform was initially designed to overcome major hurdles in the creation of new synthetic, organic and bio-based polymers, such as rubber and plastics.

Our Sarper Ozharar, Yue Tian and Yangmin Ding and Jessica L. Ware from the American Museum of Natural History have discovered that fiber optic cables equipped with distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) can pick up the sounds of Brood X cicadas. DAS technology, typically used to monitor seismic activity, can detect the vibrations caused by the loud sounds of cicadas, which live underground for years until they come up to mate.

There’s much more to autonomous vehicle security than locking a car door. This summer, Kaiyuan Zhang, a 3rd-year computer science Ph.D. student at Purdue University, joined NEC Labs America’s popular intern program to help advance research around autonomous vehicle security. Each year, nearly 50 Ph.D. candidates join NEC Labs America’s innovative program, which centers on a collaborative environment where interns work directly with senior researchers and potential end-user customers.

Existing underground fiber-optic telecommunications cable networks that can be accessed through street manholes are helping a team at NEC Labs America improve wireless communications systems and the Internet of Things (IoT). "Hundreds of millions of fiber-optic cables are already there for communications purposes,” says Shaobo Han, a researcher at NEC Labs America who focuses on the design and development of machine learning and signal-processing techniques for real-world sensing applications. “We’re turning it all into a ‘thinking’ device, using the same cable that’s already there.”

With decreasing hardware costs and increasing demand for autonomic management, many of today’s physical systems are equipped with an extensive network of sensors, generating a considerable amount of time series data daily. A highly valuable source of information, time series data is used by businesses and governments to measure and analyze change over time in complex systems. Organizations must consolidate, integrate and organize a vast amount of time series data from multiple sources to generate insights and business value.

Moore's law is dead, as we have squeezed all the innovation out of silicon. Fiber optics is the solution to meet the computing needs of tomorrow. Today, we can already use the light traveling inside fiber optic cables as sensors that measure vibrations, sound, temperature, light, and pressure changes. We're now developing the means to take this to the next level with photonic computing at the speed of light to provide faster reaction time, reduce energy consumption and improve battery range

NEC Labs America’s (NECLA) President Christopher White is attending Stanford University’s SystemX Alliance 2022 Fall Conference this week, where he is meeting with Ph.D. students, industry-leading researchers and business leaders presenting on a wide range of research topics. The annual conference will highlight exciting research in the areas of advanced materials, data analytics, energy and power management, 3D nanoprinting, and photonic and quantum computing, to name but a few!

We are helping to safely bring the first woman astronaut to the moon as part of NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Artemis Project with our System Invariant Analysis Technology (SIAT). With Lockheed Martin Space's T-Tauri AI platform, our SIAT analytics engine takes the data from the 150,000 sensors and creates a model incorporating over 22 billion data relationships. The AI model is then analyzed to find any irregularities which could lead to a possible malfunction of any of the spacecraft's systems.

By 2024, the spacecraft "Orion" developed by Lockheed Martin will bring humans to the moon in NASA's Artemis program. The system invariant analysis technology, one of NEC's Artificial Intelligence technologies, will perform checks to ensure that the spacecraft is tested and operating properly during the production phase.

The IEEE / CVF Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Conference (CVPR) is the premier annual computer vision event comprising the main conference and several co-located workshops and short courses.
