In AI research, it encompasses both classical approaches such as linear and integer programming and modern methods in which language models translate natural language problem descriptions into formal mathematical models and solver code. Research challenges include handling ambiguous or underspecified problem statements, ensuring formulation correctness, and integrating uncertainty-aware verification into the solving pipeline.
